that's why we have such a variety of makes/models .
No, not necessarily. Consumers have never been asked whether they want so many of those makes/models. Manufacturers make a variety of models and then they change, thereby ensuring the lack of spare parts availability and force you to come back to buy another 'newer' model. Kind of 'build them and they will come' approach.
The original humble VW beetle has been around for a long time with some range in the lineup but I believe one can still buy spare parts - not sure on pricing. Some older ones with no seat belts or whatever else bells and whistles - not even radiators to lose their cool. Not so much with other makes. Having such a huge range also allows for huge spare part prices as parts are limited as manufacturers are only obliged to keep such for a relatively short period of time.
Even insurers have varying prices with so many varying models - engine size, gearbox arrangements, vehicle appointments etc.
There are many ways for companies to make money and for governments to tax you or issue fines. Whilst many companies have to actually make things and sell those things to get/make money, governments can just pump out a few puffs of hot air to do so. The poor consumers having to wear the brunt - but of course some are happy to go and get the latest gadgetry so one can show off - medicos are good at that. Perhaps you think they're the trend setters??
Visit a gp, take a few deep breaths, they'll charge you afterwards accordingly. There is one medico who put down another 'lower qualified' person simply because the lesser qualified was happy having holidays locally. Apparently, staying local is below the medico's standards, who'd rather go to Paris or such like and take a ride in the EV to the airport - if for no other reason than to show off.
Perhaps the medico will soon be able to buy a fully automated, fully electric, self flying contraption appointed amongst other things with voice command functions - 'get me to the Eiffel tower on one full charge' as I don't like the local chargers in my neighbourhood nor the patients who took deep breaths in my clinic.![]()
