IMO its all about price and customers' needs.
Its not one size/type fits all.
For example if you only put up 5000 kms/year
then initial capital cost is a big issue. In my suburb
virtually everyone has a car/RV but at least half commute to
and from work on public transport because of CBD parking costs.
Together with the grey brigade , this demographic is making up
a significant %age of new car buyers . For weekend trips there
is still "range anxiety/access to charging" issues and the compromise seems
to be the hybrid.
There has been false starts with privately owned charging stations
and from memory at least one O/Seas outfit exited the Aus metro market
a few years ago with another pending:

The ideal solution is:
-Home Charger from home solar panels/storage battery for night charging.
Its interesting that the Labor Party seems to have ditched the notion of community
storage batteries to charge EVs at night . From memory this was part of their EV
policy for election 2019.
IMO China will eventually force down the price of BEVs vis economy of scale
but that is likely 5+ years away (a new car away!)
