I guess the cult of the car is still strong because when one asks
a motoring friend or a family member how much is their set of
wheels setting them back/year , they look at you incredulously
just as if you asked them how much is their kid costing them a year.
Then here's the odd one who will latch-on to only one cost of ownership variable
such as L/100 kms or initial purchase price or the cost of periodic services
but never the Full Monty. (ie: the car's cost of ownership last year was $8500, incl. fuel, tyres R&M ,
Insurance , depreciation , rego etc etc having travelled 20,000 kms or 42.5c/Km)
Then there's the non economic variables such as comfort, safety, capability, etc etc etc
One has to go to the pros for that such as taxi car owner/operators, corporate fleets or those
who are really into UBER to get a handle on the overall cost of ownership .
Will that change?
For some, perhaps yes, but for many it will be the blank stare when you ask the question
as if to say....you have to be joking......
That said, the arguments regarding the merits of BEVs, PHEVs & Hybrids vs ICEs is
taking the overall cost of ownership of "the car" into the public arena and IMO that's
a good thing.
