Ideal applications:
(a) Hybrids: City/outer City driving where there is limited time to mains-charge and or opportunity to do so.
(ideal applications: Taxis/car share)
(b) PHEVs: City/outer City motoring where the round trip is within the range of the battery in EV mode
with the reserve to resort to normal hybrid if/when needed (ideal application: car used almost exclusively
for trip to & from work say 40 Kms round trip)
(c) BEVs: all driving particularly high annual kms if/when charging stops/amenities are available
(ideal application: locum doctor/professional with home charging and who travels more than
100 kms/day and who travels in areas with mains quick charge/and who can afford time to
quick charge when needed.
The 2 considerations:
(1) total cost of ownership
(2) impact on the environment
Obviously there is a market for all 3 variants and IMO the normal hybrid is the best
allrounder choice while the charging infrastructure, pricing and Gov regs. are as is
but in the longer term (10 years +) the BEV will likely be the replacer of the ICE.
