We have had CO2 sticks on the windscreens of new cars for
nearly 15 years (the average life of a car, so, IMO , we'll likely
see the European system of taxing Rego by CO2 rather than
the current archaic system of no of cylinders with the old rego
system applying to vehicles manufactured more than 15 years
ago; albeit at a higher rate.
The only issue then to be sorted would be how to fairly tax
EVs, particularly those with zero exhaust emissions, so that
they too can pay a fair share of transport infrastructure costs.
The current mix of rego tax and fuel excise covers ICEs but
not BEVs.
