oddly enough - I would have thought that home generation AND storage was about as efficient as one could get -

transmission distance - less than 20 metres

and if the home or big battery sitting in the driveway can be utilised as a grid storage - how good is that?

it may not be perfect utopian as you termed - but, it's pretty bloody good
