Re: Tearing up roads: A friend who is a State expert of road surfaces blames 'B Doubles" , inner city developments requiring HD trucks to operate in inner city/surburban streets that were not designed for heavy loads and old ICE vehicles that drip oil on the tarmac causing it to ravel.
The latter is evident when one sees potholes developing close to road bumps which causes the leaking oil to drop from the vehicle when it hits the bump.
Just have a look at the Tip trucks, Agis & HD mobile cranes as they go to and from inner city construction sites. There are 2 such developments in my suburb and the surrounding road surface is clearly evident . The other day I watched a 6x4 HD tipper with a 4 axle dog (48 ton all up) screwing its way our of a construction site. It was raining and the surface sponging effect on the street tarmac was evident and, IMO, its only a matter of months before we have massive potholes.
The local EVs (mostly Teslas) weigh about 150 kgs more than the equivalent ice and up to 500 kgs less that many of the large SUV 4x4s of which these outnumber the EVs in my suburb by at least 10:1.
So in summary, there is no evidence that passenger EVs produce more road surface wear than equivalent ICEs ...particularly the big SUV/4x4s .
