Your assessment is obviously not shared with industry. There is confusion over using hydrogen for domestic vehicles as opposed for green steel manufacture. e.g Liberty Steel announced on 4 March it would phase out its existing blast furnace at Whyalla Steelworks and build a new DRI-EAF. It will initially consume natural gas and hydrogen before shifting completely to green hydrogen.
The company has already tested the possibility of producing DR-grade iron ore pellets from existing magnetite ores in South Australia.Whyalla’s Carbon Neutral by 2030 plan (CN30) is focused on producing 15 million tonnes of high-quality magnetite iron ore, from which 10 million tonnes of green DRI will be produced for the both domestic and export market.
Also:
The Suiso Frontier transported super-cooled liquid hydrogen from Victoria’s Port Hastings to Kobe. The 116-metre vessel is the world’s first purpose-built liquefied hydrogen carrier
Also:
Nippon Steel and peers ArcelorMittal, the world’s biggest steelmaker outside of China, and China Baowu Steel Group have all pledged to become carbon neutral by the middle of this century. Elsewhere, South Korean rival Posco recently announced a plan to invest $US40 billion ($59.6 billion) in hydrogen manufacturing as well as green steel with partners in Australia by 2040. Nippon steel want to set up green hydrogen production outside of Japan because its cheaper to do so in Australia and Brazil.
These big companies are going to make it all happen for green steel . Andrew Forrest is aware of this, hence the push to green hydrogen, and magnetite mining, and using Pilbara iron ore for DRI, which he claims hos pilot plant has achieved. It,s all about green steel and H2 transport for heavy industry.
