Professor May said an application for a Future Energy Exports Cooperative Research Centre would be made midyear to secure Federal funds to help build the facility and provide an operational budget of about $80 million over 10 years. If the bid is successful, construction would start in mid-2020 and take up to 18 months.
He said cheap US LNG threatened the Australian industry and in the longer term customers wanted to decarbonise their energy.
Professor May said as well as LNG the centre would research the export of “the cheapest form of hydrogen which is fossil fuels appropriately carbon offset”.
