Turquoise hydrogen is the cheapest clean H2 production pathway in Europe today — cheaper even than blue hydrogen made with steam methane reformation and carbon capture and storage (CCS), according to a new report by trade association Hydrogen Europe.The turquoise pathway produces hydrogen from fossil gas, heating it to upwards of 2,000°C in the absence of air in a special reactor, a process called methane pyrolysis, splitting the molecules into hydrogen and solid carbon, or “carbon black”, with zero emissions (presuming it is powered by renewable energy).
