I was catching up on some chemistry.
Pull up a periodic table.
We're going to rule out Aluminium because when steam and heat is involved it likes to keep its oxygen afaict.
1st row transition metals, elements 21 to 30.
As you go left to right the tendency is to hold Oxygen more loosely. The first 4 are also expensive.
Manganese is also not quite as good as iron and more expensive.
So I'm suggesting they are in the Cobalt, Nickel, Copper, Zinc (or mixture thereof) area, all of which have ores that are more expensive than iron.
Nothing else is in the race as far as I can tell.
