The only break through here if for transportation in stable ammonia form. Nothing new with hydrogen production. However hydrogen could still take off IF electricity prices come down etc.
Hydrogen is still cheaper to product from natural gas rather then electrolysis, however if we ever get excess or cheap electricity electrolysis produces hydrogen from pan old water.
Advantages of hydrogen cars over electric: They are more efficient than petrol cars and have longer driving ranges then even petrol cars. Can fill up in minutes like petrol cars.
All depends on electricity prices i guess, unless someone works out another cheaper way to produce hydrogen from water.
