95% of the world's hydrogen is made using the SMR process. Unfortunately for every ton of hydrogen produced via SMR there are 10 tons of CO2. Rather than pump it back underground, splitting the methane and storing the carbon as battery grade graphite or other useful carbon morphologies is a no brainer IMO, making natural gas a clean resource.
