I was at a MIT lecture the other day and they were saying that hydrogen, although not a greenhouse gas, when in the atmosphere reduces the rate the methane is broken down, therefore contributing to global warming.
Although this is a negative, if hydrogen is used without much escaping (which occurs regularly in transport), this isn't a problem. So best case is that hydrogen generation is done near the point of use.
