Revisionism is always lurking on this one. Reformed communist Philip Adams was arguing a few nights ago that the A bomb was not necessary to end WW2. Well it wasn't if you wanted the war to drag on for a considerable time and cost many more American AND Japanese lives. And as an added benefit, it held a victorious Russia in check from launching its battle hardened armies in all directions.
