Do you really think that farmers, scientists and government dont want to maximize the productivity of the land? Do you think that there is a conspiracy to suppress all the wonderful ideas of a few mavericks that would surely turn Australia into a green Nirvana? And why would anyone not consider an idea with a demonstrated benefit?
A few million of the taxpayers money gets burnt by government in consulting fees every few years to placate the the calls from those who believe in droughtproofing Australia by means of a giant pipe or such like contraption. And the answer is always the same: Not economically feasible.
Maybe some day technical advances like carbon nanotube desalination and highly efficient and cheap nuclear power might give more water options. When that happens, fantastic. Until that time, championing ideas that lack scientific backing would seem to be a bit misdirected.
