Then there is the cost of the land, labour, machinery, fertilizer (don't start me on that), transport, fuel, loading and offloading.
In some places lucerne is cheaper than grass hay. Unfortunately, you can't feed horses purely on lucerne.
18 months ago I was buying lucerne for $10 a bale, but that was the previous summer's cut.
BTW... the wombats were here first, and they don't eat much.
