How a person could stake their reputation on a mine dependent on the outcome of a undeveloped and fractious nascent government says more about their reputation and their willingness to stake it than the result.
It's like a person staking their reputation on the toss of a coin. if you're right. the good if you're wrong everyone knows it's was 50/50 chance. That's certainly the feel I got for a touch of the bombast in his views.
I'll stake my reputation and my fortune on the mine going ahead as well (in the next 100 years).
