I used to work for an airline and yes there was a preference for sitting next to women if not a strict rule.
For the most part women are more open to, communicative and nurturing towards children than men so it makes sense to me, it's not necessarily a "sexual predator issue".
It's only in our PC world that his becomes a big deal.
Women constantly complain about sexism so men want the chance to complain as well.
