he didnt have much choice was backed into a corner so rather than give into the unions and let them dominate he's pulled the plug.
most mgrs would do the same when the union movement are unreasonable,the workers are ok have no ability to individually compromise now they are paying the price,in the real world you'd be put on notice and later possibly end up losing your job.
