I think the problem is he missed the boat and now is very scared to buy at these prices. There is a possibility that the SP could retreat somewhat in the next few months/years - yes it could gain a lot more also.
Now for someone say 55+ or retired then they may not be able to handle a significant reduction in their portfolio.
Different people have different risk tolerance also.
You need to weigh up the risk and make a decision. In or stay out. It has always been a question to ask yourself - a stock you own now - would you buy it at today's price. Not an easy question to answer sometimes.
