IT WAS a nice morning in Singapore. I woke up really early in my room in the super Scarlet Hotel, so I went down to the lobby to borrow free DVDs. I was still kinda groggy, so I thought I was hallucinating when I saw three of the ugliest creatures on the planet trying to check in at the desk.
The nice lady was trying to explain that check-in time’s at 12 noon, but the animals wouldn’t listen. “We want a room!” It was seven in the morning. Now, I needed to pass the time watching DVDs, so I went up to the desk. And that turned out to be a really bad idea.
The devils turned towards me, and then one of them grabbed me… by the knee. My knees are extremely ticklish. So I looked into the thing’s eyes, and I knew what it wanted. They wanted my room key!
What followed was twenty minutes of really bad luchadore wrestling. One of them reached into my pocket and snatched my Moto SLVR and said he was going to crush it. That’s how they won the match against me and the receptionists.

Who are you?
Lenny: Ohmygod, you don’t recognize us?! We’re TV personalities! Celebrities! Stars! Serious actors. I -- you’re just out of the radar.
Donny: We’re with MTV Mobbed!
Gus: Slurp, slurp.
What are you guys up to?
Lenny: World domination, little Asian man.
You can’t do that.
Donny: Yes we can, we’re American! I mean, no, we’re not American. I’m confused.
Gus: You wear panties.
Donny: They’re not panties they’re just yellow!
What’s your plan?
Lenny: We can’t tell you.
You don’t have one.
Lenny: Yes we do! This is the plan: We reach young people on-air, online, on-mobile, and even on-ground. They get news, ringtones, wallpapers, screensavers, lifesavers, supersavers, supersize me… I’m lost. Donny, take over.
Donny: I need my notes! (Fumbles) They get MOTOALERT too, where artists are featured every month. There are games, and contests -- and everyone can set up their own MTV Mobbed blog. And then little by little the youth of Asia starts looking like us. Mwahahaha.
Donny and Lenny: Mwahahaha.
Gus: I like chewing gum.
Lenny: We will rule… Asia and um, then the world!
People aren’t going to buy any of that.
Donny: Yes they will! Every time they interact with Mobbed they get moolah.
Gus: Moolah!
Lenny: They get booty too-artist merchandise, concert tickets, and collectibles and stuff.
You b*stards. I will stop you.
Lenny: No you can’t! If you do anything to stop us… we’ll give you a phone for free just to shut up. Cough.
Donny: That’s why we give phones away on mtvmobbed.com. It’s elementary, really.
Gus: Lenny likes girl bands.
Lenny: Shut up, Gus.
You’ll never get away with it.
Donny: When you’re with Mobbed you get away with anything.
Lenny: I’ve chewed gum in Singapore. Ooh, what a rush.

Meet the mobsters

Lenny
The pink-skinned green-moustached oldest of the crew is a former importer of chewing gum, former B-movie extra, former band manager, former band member (18 bands between 1971-1996 alone), former manga comic artist and former toys salesman. He now makes his money running a website selling ad banner space, which means he has nothing to do besides being with his good friends having fun.
Loves: Girlbands, triple espresso on the rocks, hot curry sauce on everything, David Lee Roth but also contemporary stuff such as Led Zeppelin. He only wears nice white underpants and fresh white sport socks. On occasions, he likes to show up in flashy hip-hop bling mixed with sneakerwear from Japan.
Gus
Leader, most prominent, iconic figure, but not most popular figure in the squad. Good sense for prank jokes, extreme stunts, physical activity. He knows all about the latest news and is a big fan of so-called weird news (dog saves 30 Singaporean tourists from obesity).
Loves: Chewing gum especially the Euro-imported kind (that’s the reason why he and Lenny met, back in the day Lenny was importing the gum from France). Any loud music with guitars preferably or music with a singing saw. Gus knows a lot (really a lot) about gangster movies. He speaks various languages badly.
Donny
Pro surfer gone model. An energetic, heads down, all good kinda guy. Very popular with the ladies (“he’s so cute”). Lives a healthy Californian kind of lifestyle, even though he was born and raised on a island somewhere between Australia and Sumatra (but nobody really knows for sure, all he can remember is surfing offshore one day and ending up in a big harbor city).
Loves: Señor Coconut, Princess Superstar, Dizzy Raskall, Burt Bacharach, Mariah Carey (well, not really that he likes her, he just likes to sing like her. He does a great imitation but slightly offkey) Seaweed salad, carrot ice cream, carrot milkshake, carrot pizza, hot chocolate, anything steamed and nothing fried.
