Your point is valid... on the surface.

but how do First Nations ppl get qualifications and experience when the barriers against them are so high.... the idea is to reduce those barriers through preferential treatment instead of the preference going to white ppl.

Anti-discrimination is the correct term for this as the discrimination has always been against First Nations ppl. This is only redressing an imbalance,

The whole push is centred on enabling first nations ppl to gain employment, training and experience so that they can become productive rather than wasting lives because of discrimination in preference for non-aboriginal ppl.

The policies are supported by both sides of parliament, supported by business, eg Andrew Forrest and others, and economists. The cost of lost productivity and the weight of dependence on Govt funds for lifetimes needed to be addressed and this anti-discrimination or affirmative action is working. It has resulted in falling rates of dependency on Govt funds, increased productivity and reduced alcohol and other drug use, reduced violent assaults, reduced dysfunction in aboriginal communities where such employment has been made available.....

This study gives an excellent overview of Affirmative Action (started by Howard).... its well worth a read.
