re: capital gains We should be encouragin investment over savings - given the high level of superannuation investments - if we lowered the CGT to a flat 30% or 20% (perhaps 2% each year over 5 years) it would kick start sharemarket activity and even foreign investment - with our strong corparate disclosure laws this could be a benefit. Already many foreign firms have set up HQ at a regional level because our funds management market is the 4th largest globally (includes superannuation management) and yet we are only the 13th largest market. - no wonder the ASX is at all time highs and companies are faling over themselves to list - it is also a defacto tax raiser for the fed govt and also a motivational push for small companies to list and take chances.
