I also have a SMSF. There is an option to fill out the w-8ben form electronically rather than post it to the US. Firstly you must register with Computershare. Go to Investor Centre at www.computershare.com/investor and click on 'Create Login.' Once you have created your login, you will get an on-screen message saying that a verification code will be sent to your mailing address in approximately 15 business days. When you have received your verification code, log in to Investor Centre, and you should have full access to view and conduct transactions within your account. When you log in, you will receive an alert saying your account is not tax certified. Select 'Manage Alerts' within My Profile to certify your account.
