Elon tweeted this earlier;
“We intend to increase, not reduce battery cell purchases from Panasonic, LG & CATL (possibly other partners too). However, even with our cell suppliers going at maximum speed, we still foresee significant shortages in 2022 & beyond unless we also take action ourselves.”
If Tesla are planning on buying up so many batteries surely this means lithium will move rapidly to under supplied with lithium prices changing accordingly! Especially if they are going to make significant amounts themselves.
With that in mind the PLS/POSCO JV seems like a pretty good idea. Hopefully we get confirmation soon. Ken said POSCO was going to their board in the Q3 so they haven’t got long left. Maybe (hopefully) their board already approved it and it’s announced after Elon has put a rocket up the sector. Wishful thinking I guess.
