Elon is looking at clay because as he often stated" In the near future Tesla will need all the available sources of lithium World Wide just to meet their projected insatiable demand."
So, clay extraction would be an insurance policy against projected shortages of Lithium from all other sources.
So what's the drama here......one word ...................."shortages "
So need to panic at all.
