I lived in China for a year, I was about 68 then and when I boarded a city bus several people would stand and offer me their seat ( the bus's were always full) it was like an honor to them to let me sit down. Mind you, during that year I only saw 2 other laowai's , foreigners .. (white ) in that city of 1 million.
