I find typically Australian's like to give the independent shop keeper money rather than a franchise especially with coffee. I prefer the local owner who is running independent as they put more care/attention to their product as they cant afford the same marketing spend.
I have been going to the same pizza joint since I moved to Melbourne 10 years ago - i have since moved in that time so don't go as often as i used to but if i feel like a good pizza i would rather drive 30-40 minutes to get one than to order a pizza from any of the major brands.
If i was out and there is a GJ or SB I would actually move on and see if i can find the independent one.
I think Aussies only want brands when it comes material goods not consumables as much.
