I can only speak from personal experience. Recently, during very cold weather in NZ an extra coal generation unit was not brought online in time which caused a blackout to part of the North Island. It is my understanding that the coal generation creates baseload for the grid. Gas which is also a fossil fuel is also going to be used in Australia to generate power by the Australian Government's proposed new power station during times of stress to the grid. The Australian Government is using taxpayers money to effectively undercut AGL which is a privately run company. This sends a clear message to all investors including foreign holders that Australia is not a safe place to invest capital in the future. Talk about a slippery slope!
