AGL took a massive impairment due to the fall in the NEM spot price over time... reality is that if they had of continued to hold the assets directly, no impairment would have been needed.
Benefit of renewable generation over coal generation is that the inputs post production are less variable... there is no additional raw material required to be paid for... much easier to maintain a fixed cost point on than a coal plant
If you view that the NEM spot price will further decline & smooth over time (which I do) you have to view AGLs assets and PPAs as being onerous at present. They need more LCOE assets and time shifting storage assets - both of which they have been too slow to move on.
IMO the lighter balance sheet (then) has been far outweighed by the loss of shareholder value since that time.
