Short sellers will sometimes look to exit a position if they believe that liquidators will be appointed.
A liquidation of a large company with multi national interests can take years and open short positions cannot be ratified until shares are declared worthless.
The fact that the stock continues to tread water despite significant short closing is not encouraging and there is less chance of a short squeeze.
Auditors have already raised the "going concern" note.
