    The rigid gender roles that existed in our so-called free society.
    It wasn't till sometime in the 60s that girls were allowed to be taught science in secondary schools. Biology was the first subject allowed, but human reproduction wasn't part of it, only how plants did it. Then Chemistry came in but not Physics for some time. The female brain wasn't thought capable of dealing with Physics.

    It was very difficult for girls who wanted to be doctors prior to that time because they hadn't had the science basics.
    BUT they did know about sewing.
    Up till about the same period sewing was compulsory for girls right through to the end of schooling.
    A truly equal opportunity society we were back then . . not. It's no wonder so many men still have neolithic attitudes towards women.
