I always tell people, never gamble with your own house, not unless you are financially in over your head.
One thing any expert will tell you is you can spot bubbles, but you can never pick when they are going to burst. So is a hard one to short like you had.
At least with investement property you can just ditch them, wipe your hands clean, and get on with things without having to worry about the risk of holding..
