The other school of thought is the standard model. They want to look for the existence of the higgs boson. They know everything about particles except what gives it mass? They have a theory that we live in a higs matrix. objects inside that martix has mass but as we have motion it drags on the higs field giving a heavier mass. ie you get heavier as you go faster. So the experient will allow them to look for the higgs particle when they smash them together.
