It is very sad that another bunch of good people are going to lose their jobs...
We have to stop the feel sorry for us mentality and the we deserve jobs mentality and sell ourselves a whole lot better. I think the days of having a job just because you breathe are well past us.
Companies have to make profits to stay alive and to offer jobs and growth. Revenue goes down, changes have to be made.
Australia is a part of Asia whether we like it or not...just need to look at a map of the world to figure that out. The elephant in the room is high wages relative to countries a couple of hours away by plane, or a few nanoseconds via the internet.
While we have hundreds of thousands of people on our doorstep prepared to work for as little as $5.00 or less per hour, it is very difficult to compete at even $25.00 per hour.
John the Aussie down the road has to make some major justification as to why he is worth up to 5 times as much as Fred the Indian.
When you add the penalties and Government taxes and employer obligations the gloss comes off the Australian labour pretty quickly.
New Zealand is set to benefit as they have lower employee costs the article reads?
I hope the incoming Coalition Government gets rid of the regressive useless Carbon Tax for a start. Then lets tackle other issues such as the compulsory Superannuation contribution and legislate that the contribution comes out of an employee's wages, not a psuedo payrise every time the contribution is increased.
Let's not keep reducing weekly working hours to the ridiculous and adding more and more costs onto employers, forcing up hourly rates...a fair days work for a fair days pay...
Legislate and control the unions, have them fall under the Corporations Act and have them pay tax like any other business.
If we don't do something positive for ourselves instead of whinging every time a Corporation moves their business offshore we will very soon be the banana republic selling trinkets to tourists for an income.
It is very unfortunate indeed we have had to suffer under a Socialist brain dead Government for the past 6 years. Hell bent it seems on destroying our economy...I worry we may never ever recover from the damage they have caused to this country and the business within.
