I'm afraid you've fallen for the UNW spin Chris.
UNW does not use Wimax technology, it uses proprietary Navini technology. Wimax is not yet an agreed standard. UNW claim they are "getting ready" for it (they certainly talk about it a lot) but will first have to raise more capital to acquire the base stations - when such things exist. Wimax doesn't penetrate tunnels either - this is to do with the frequncy they operate at.
Unwired currently operates at a higher frequency to iBurst so its penetration of buildings is actually quite poor. They recently did a swap with AUN so that they will have some lower frequency spectrum - closer to iBursts.
I use iBurst around town and it is a great service, very fast and cheaper than Telstras EVDO. I don't know much about the others like 3 and Vodafone but they're probably getting a bit more competitive now.
As syringe points out iBursts range is currently limited to the east coast capital cities, and not the outer suburbs, so hopefully CDR will continue the rollout.
If you really want the gory details on these services and technologies forums.whirlpool.net.au has endless discussion on them.
