    You are correct in that most of us have nothing to hide.

    While I am not strongly for or againsta National ID cards, there is quite a scope for abuse of many forms and so, if implimented, there need to be some very well thought out regulations and procedures to maintain integrty of the system and privacy and protection for all of us.

    Often the first thing that happens with these systems is that some aspects of the data collection/storage/processing/archiving is out-sourced to one of more private companies. These companies may have good policies which they activly enforce on their employees, or they may be sloppy in their procedures and have a few bad employees from time to time.
    Apart from the fact that many of these companies often have very short lifetimes and that during the shutdown, data protection might take second fiddle to sale of assets like olf cumputer hard drives, often one or more of these companies might eventually outsouce part of their job to India/China or some other coutry where it is much more difficult to enforce existing laws and standards and motives might be different to what we expcet.

    This happened very recently with bank and credit card records as you will find with a simple web search.
