Petrol sold in NSW will be blended with a mandatory two per cent of ethanol by September this year under a plan by Premier Morris Iemma.
The move, likely to upset some motorists while pleasing environementalists, would be the first step towards an pledge made by Mr Iemma last year for 10 per cent ethanol content in petrol by 2011.
Mr Iemma, who on Sunday launch his campaign for the March 24 state election, was due to unveil his latest plan at a service station in Petersham in Sydney's inner west today.
