DJ Atlas Iron to Stop Mining After Iron-Ore Price Plunge
By Rhiannon Hoyle
SYDNEY--Australian iron-ore producer Atlas Iron Ltd. (AGO.AU) will stop mining in the
coming weeks after a sharp plunge in prices of the steelmaking commodity meant its
operations were no longer profitable.
The company, which suspended its shares earlier this week after iron-ore prices tumbled
to a decade low, said it would cease mining at its Mt Webber site next week and halt
production at its Abydos operation within a fortnight. Operations at its Wodgina mine are
expected to stop in late April, it said.
Iron-ore prices have fallen more than 30% in 2015 after a near halving in value last
year, as supplies from new and expanded mines outpace demand from countries such as
China.
