Pinto, I wasn't wrong. At Geelong, Gladstone and Newcastle renewables can't power aluminium smelters.
There are a few places in the world where ample hydro has been available to power smelters. There are a few sites in Asia where this may be possible in future but there is limited new hydro coming on stream.
Smelters, like primary steel production, require vast amounts of energy. To get that from solar cells or wind turbines, then store half of it for use overnight is impractical.
Question for you, can you envisage the Gladstone smelter powered by solar cells and batteries overnight?
