One of the best places I have stayed is 50km south of Munich, Germany. Spent 6 weeks there in the Spring of 2009.
We looked after a house in a small farming community called Faistenberg - Eurasburg. The Bavarian Alps just a few km's away, still capped in snow, lush green fields, lots of walking & bike tracks through the woods, small rivers, wild deer, beautiful clear sunny days in the low 20's, great country roads to drive on, autobahn not far away to Munich.
There are a lot of small communities in this very rural part of Germany, very easy to take a walk or bike to the many restaurants in the area, all very traditional Bavarian.
This is one place I could live, l although I think the winter would be too cold for me, property is very expensive. But for me, Spring and Summer, this is one of the best places on anywhere on earth.
Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein a couple of hours drive away.
