Takeda has signed up with privately owned, Texas-based Molecular Templates to combine the biotech’s engineered toxin bodies (ETB) platform with oncology therapeutic targets provided by Takeda. The Japanese pharma had already been working with Molecular Templates on a program which it has the option to in-license.

ETBs self-navigate to the cytosol. Payloads can be genetically or chemically conjugated to ETBs to allow for extracellular targeting and intracellular delivery. Payloads can include proteins, nucleic acids, or small molecules. ETBs can deliver foreign class 1 antigens for processing and presentation in complex with MHC class I molecules on the surface of target cells. Seeding of foreign antigens in a tumor cell for surface expression is a novel approach to immuno-oncology.
Under the terms of the agreement, Takeda will make an equity investment and Molecular Templates is eligible to receive undisclosed upfront and milestone payments as well as royalties on the sales of any commercial products developed through the partnership. Takeda can exercise exclusive options to obtain license rights to products created from the collaboration and Molecular Templates would be responsible for the manufacture and supply of products licensed for development by Takeda through Phase I.
