OK, OK, I know I am developing a reputation as a battery nut.
IFN has just spent $74m on the Smithfield gas generator to 'firm' variable renewable generation - its own and on contact for others. I am now satisfied this will work very well.
The fact remains, IFN will still be selling 25% of its output on the spot market and has no capacity to time-shift night/intermittent generation to fill daytime peaks in NSW, its biggest market - which would substantially improve margins. And nobody talks about how much renewable electricity generation is 'spilled' and therefore lost.
IFN has three major connection points to the Sydney Canberra interconnect at Capital, Woodlawn and Smithfield and could place big batteries or synchronous condensers at any or all. Further, there is a significant first-mover advantage for the earliest installer.
Government will love the supply security benefits and the CEFC would be good for cheap part finance.

RR & team know this, live and breathe this stuff. Since sloughing off the paralysing cash-sweep debt, IFN has built Bodangora WF and the Lake Bonney battery, contracted Kiama and Cherry Tree, and bought Smithfield. Next up, Forsayth WF and batteries.
