Yes, the morning electricity demand peak is smaller and shorter than the evening peak. Still, W + B is able to discharge at the maximum rate of the battery into both peaks and recharge night and day, which S + B cannot. While this insight is likely well known in informed circles, it is still fresh to me and requires more thinking.
I am impressed by the benefits you outline of variable speed H, still well short of the millisecond responses of a B. My instinct is to add a B, less S and more W into KRH. Even a little big B would prove highly advantageous - including to protect the H turbines.
You refer to the need to align with national and state strategies. The present incoherence of these aside, the practical reality is, private capital is the risk taker and must live with the consequences of building the generating assets. I do not offer some jeering, sneering form of private capital primacy. Rather, I observe the perspectives of politicians needing éclat, bureaucrats needing 99.999% supply delivery and capital needing a return proportionate to risk can only be brought together by careful considered durable policy. This is really, really hard given the urgency of climate change, the pace of innovation, continuing efficiency gains and on. Many moving parts to reconcile. Who knows, someone may invent a flux capacitor and solve all our problems.
Think of the poor blighters who were obliged to put in condensers at great expense because some polly thought system inertia could only be provided by rotational velocity.
The entrenched irreconcilable positions of climate change activists and conservatives have stymied any resolution - neither is prepared to give an inch. We cannot console the inconsolable.
Turning to GNX's predicament, I see no action from EA to bring KRH into being. The continued weakening share price suggests no one close to the action has found a solution. I don't mean insider trading. Many experts will have been appraised of the problem in the search for an idea that cuts this Gordian Knot, without success. I think GNX will collapse. Whether it falls to EA, AGL, IFN or another is an open question, as is the present value of this impressive project.
Best wishes
