Combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants, such as Tallawarra in NSW, have very different LCOE to peakers. These provide 'baseload' power to an equivalent cost range of today's solar and wind - and far cheaper than new coal, nuclear or gas peaking.
Gas is an easy political win as its not coal, has lower emissions (figures differ - but roughly 20%) and big private investment has already begun with Shell announcing in April its investment decision to commence the $10 billion Surat Basin project, immediately. Expect these to roll on fast as protestors are forced to socially distance, and the voting public is more concerned with 'jobs and growth' over environmental outcomes.
