More from batt-crazy Ash. (feel free to ignore my ravings)
Have a look at the charts on FCAS revenues, Discharge revenues and Charging costs for the small Dalrymple SA battery in this piece from RenewEconomy.

There is real money to be made skimming off unused and low value night electricity and reselling at peak prices. Smithfield OCGT is plugged into the Sydney-Canberra electricity corridor by a fat 208MW high voltage interconnector. The 'firming' capacity of Smithfield + battery would be greater in combination than as two facilities. Abundant vacant land adjoins on which to build.
And the beautiful thing is, a battery here would mean an alternative destination for uncontracted Smithfield generation - during warmups, etc. Abruptly, the facility would not waste a single volt/millisecond.
RR & team are still bedding down the Lake Bonney battery and have just taken operational control of Smithfield, so we cannot expect instant action. Yet this material opportunity beckons.
