In my mind there are 3 scenarios for storage that cover short, medium and long term options.

Short term is batteries as they are relatively quick to install and commission but they have a short life (relatively) and the capacity requirements will make them a minor player as Coal plants retire.

Long term pumped hydro will grow as it has a long plant life, large storage capacity and due to the long time frame the cost will amortize to a low cost per MW but the capital outlay is a major barrier.

Medium term (and maybe short term) I see hydrogen regeneration plants as viable option.

The scalability, flexibility and bypassing of the carbon cycle make hydrogen storage and generation a strong candidate.
Small scale hydrogen fuel cells and generators are available for small loads at/near user sites.
hydrogen can be shipped and can be stored in appropriate locations in bulk.
There is a lot of Government focus on hydrogen power modes with the associated funding forthcoming to those who can come up with viable options.
