It is a shame for Australia that environmental awareness has been captured by the left, when to advance it needs to be integrated into all political perspectives.
Nature Conservation Council CEO Kate Smolsk's stance is appalling in that she wants the government to whack fossil fuels with a big stick. Mate, this is a dead man walking. We will never build another fossil-fuel power generator and existing kit is all stranded assets. Uninvestable. Yes, it is disgusting they captured the Abbott government, but that condemns the Loon Pond, not the generators trying to get one last puff from the cigar butt.
The economics of power generation are clear: renewables have won - on price.
The Nature Conservation Council's desire to use blunt force would be better directed to the rehabilitation of former mine sites, as the miners have every intention of simply walking away from enormous tracts of toxic moonscape.
