A couple of years ago I sowed some snow pea seeds in my vegie patch hoping to pick snow pea in time. They sprouted a week or two later only to disappear completely one morning when I went to check. It looked to me like the snails have eaten them. I thought my hope of picking snow peas from my vegie patch was gone. But then a few weeks later the remnant in the ground continue to sprung up and kept growing. Eventually my hope of picking snow peas came true.
The moral of the story: What can be seen does not tell the whole story. My snow pea sprout vanished without a trace (or apparently so) but then they came back and produced the fruit I was looking for.
BLY does not look as bad as my snow peas. Google alert just sent me a few more articles re Boart Long Year. They just had a few new contracts signed. Drilling demand is picking up. In time I will pick the fruits I have hoped and waited for, although for now the bloody snails are helping themselves to the sprouts. If I were french I'll eat those snails if I catch them.
